To protect against product reverse engineering and enable easy identification of original and spare sealing components, Simrit – the industrial sealing products business of Freudenberg-NOK Sealing Technologies – has developed a sophisticated safety technology. The safe® (secure adaptive Freudenberg encryption) laser technology, which was recently granted a European patent (EP 2 096 580 B1), is suited for industries with high safety and traceability requirements, such as energy or aerospace.

Simrit’s safe technology marks elastomer components, such as seals, diaphragms and elastomer composite parts, with an anti-fraud designation that is invisible to the naked eye. This identification contains key product information, including an item description, model number, dimensions, material, date of manufacture and serial numbers, for reliable traceability, as well as counterfeiting protection.

“Counterfeit parts made from inferior materials and components can cause very costly, even potentially fatal, consequences,” said Vinay Nilkanth, vice president global sales aerospace, Simrit. “Simrit’s safe technology provides a simple and cost-effective solution to accurately identify both original and spare parts. The technology is an easy-to-use, durable solution with numerous safety and cost-saving benefits, including reduced warranty claims resulting from failure due to counterfeit components.”
The system consists of a laser marker with coding software and a reader that allows the customer to interpret the code located on the part. Two different safe product markings are available: a flat, rectangular code; and a rounded product marking better suited for o-rings. The markings are specific to the product (each product receives a unique code) that can only be read by the safe machines. Impervious to wear, the code is legible even if up to 70 percent of the marking has been destroyed.

Currently, Simrit can mark elastomers and thermoplastics, as well as metals, with the exception of light colored or transparent materials such as silicone rubber. A solution for light-colored / transparent materials is currently in development. Created in Europe, the safe technology is available globally and applicable to a variety of industries. The system is currently in use in a small number of highly sensitive application areas.

Simrit is part of Freudenberg-NOK Sealing Technologies and offers an extensive portfolio of precision-manufactured products for the aerospace, agriculture, appliance, construction, energy, fluid power, mechanical power generation, mechanical power transmission and recreation markets. Simrit’s global sales exceed $1.3 billion. For more information, visit the Simrit website at www.simrit.com.

ELGIN, Ill., March 26, 2012 – Simrit’s Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada facility was recently awarded United Technologies Corp.’s (UTC) Supplier Gold status for its outstanding performance in delivery, quality, lean practices and customer support. This is the third year that the facility has earned UTC’s gold status and is one of only five original Gold Supplier recipients to maintain this status for three consecutive years.

The Supplier Gold award recognizes companies that offer superior performance. The four criteria that are used to evaluate suppliers for this award include: excellent customer service; on-time product delivery; best-in-class quality for the last 12 months; and use of lean practices throughout operations. Simrit’s Tillsonburg facility, which was awarded Supplier Gold status out of UTC’s nearly 10,000 suppliers, supplies jet engine seals to Pratt & Whitney Canada including, high temperature, fire proof, fuel and high temperature synthetic (HTS) oil seals, and air inlet screens.

“Our Tillsonburg facility is an outstanding example of Simrit’s overall commitment to quality and lean practices,” said Vinay Nilkanth, vice president global sales aerospace, Simrit. “This honor is a testament to the Tillsonburg team. Their dedication to excellence is a key component to Simrit’s success in supplying the global aerospace industry with superior sealing solutions.”

The Nadcap-approved Tillsonburg plant is one of the most experienced facilities in the aerospace industry. It designs and manufactures aerodynamic seals and sealing products, including engine seals, thrust reverser seals, and door and window seals, for commercial aircraft and jet engines. The facility is certified to the AS9100 Revision C quality management system including design for the aerospace industry.

This recognition is the latest in a series of aerospace-related achievements. In June 2011, Simrit’s Santa Ana, Calif. facility earned the expanded AS9100 quality management system certification including design and in October its Lutterworth, Leicestershire, U.K. facility received the AS9120 Revision A certification.

Simrit – the industrial sealing products division of Freudenberg-NOK Sealing Technologies – is supplying a customized silicone seal for the emergency door application in China’s first commercial aircraft. Specifically designed for the precise requirements of the emergency door application, the seal offers low abrasion and reduced friction characteristics to meet the demanding needs of the global aerospace industry. These requirements were critical to the success of the seal, as they result in increased durability when opening and closing of an emergency door is necessary.

“The technology resources at our Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada facility and Malaysia Technology Center did an excellent job in designing and validating the customer’s proposed design,” said Vinay Nilkanth, vice president global sales aerospace, Simrit. “Not only did this global collaboration develop a solution that met the customer’s final requirement, but the seal design also outperformed the competition’s seal.”

The single-piece seal met the customer’s technical requirements, as well as general door requirements, which included ease of opening and accessibility during service and maintenance. Additionally, the seal provides low temperature capability and successfully satisfied the customer’s load deflection and closure force conditions.

The Tillsonburg plant – Freudenberg-NOK Sealing Technologies’ oldest manufacturing facility – designs and manufactures aerodynamic seals and sealing products, including engine seals, thrust reverse seals and door and window seals, for commercial aircrafts and jet engines. The facility was named a United Technologies Corp. Supplier Gold Award winner for three consecutive years (2009 – 2011). Opened in 2005, the Malaysia Technology Center is an engineering development facility that provides vital technical around the clock support to improve turnaround times both locally and globally.
