Developed specifically to meet the sealing challenges of today’s cylinder makers, Simrit’s NOK U641 and NOK UH05 materials are proven to help engineers extend seal life in numerous applications. When incorporated properly, these materials provide 8,000 to more than 10,000 hours of running time in the field without failure.

“Industry challenges, such as temperature, hydrolysis resistance and bio-friendly fluid compatibility, will consistently drive the need for more robust sealing solutions,” said Joel Johnson, vice president of technology, Simrit. “As a materials and sealing innovator, Simrit anticipated these upcoming changes and developed next-generation materials for issues that our customer’s are now encountering. This forward-thinking allows us to serve our customers’ current problems with established and proven solutions.”

For customers currently using the Disogrin 9250 material, the NOK U641 urethane is an alternative solution that is hydrolysis/glycol resistant and increases the long term operating temperature of the system to 110°C with standard and biodegradable hydraulic oils. It can be run in the same tooling as Disogrin 9250 and has been a proven solution for more than a half decade. For those looking to significantly increase the life target of a system, substituting a NOK A505 NBR rod seal (with proper back-up) and a U641 buffer can double the life of this system.

NOK UH05 urethane is a hydrolysis/glycol resistant solution for 120°C systems with standard and biodegradable hydraulic oils. In particular, NOK UH05 (40°C to 120°C temperature range) seals have been successful in hydraulic cylinders exposed to extremely harsh conditions.

It is rare for a material to not only have this high of a temperature range in the industry (allowing for use in a Columbian coal mine), but also one of the lowest temperature capabilities (allowing for use in Antarctic applications). Traditionally, a manufacturer would require two different sealing packages for each application. Using a NOK UH05 (buffer) in combination with NOK G928 HNBR rod seal (with proper back-up) can double the life of a system at 120°C, while providing exceptional low temperature capabilities.

For additional information or to speak with a Simrit expert about the company’s U641 or UH05 material solutions, stop by the Simrit booth (#S-13657) at the IFPE 2011 Show held at the Las Vegas Convention Center from March 22 to 26.

Simrit is part of the Freudenberg and NOK Group Companies, which have total annual sales of more than $7 billion. The global Freudenberg and NOK Group offers an extensive portfolio of precision-manufactured products for the aerospace, appliance, automotive, marine, medical, off-highway equipment, recreational vehicle and renewable energy markets.

To address the increasing demands placed on crankshaft seals, Simrit has developed its CASCO (self-contained seal design) Cassette Shaft Seal. On display at the Simrit booth (#S-13657) during the 2011 IFPE Show, this next-generation seal design was developed specifically to provide the lowest friction of any seal in the industry, an extended service life – in excess of one million miles – and increased reliability for modern heavy duty engine applications.

Simrit’s CASCO seal design integrates sealing elements and contact surfaces in a single cartridge that press fits into a bore with complimentary assembly tools. Uniquely, the main lip is perpendicular to the shaft and axially loaded to extend service life, which also addresses difficult operating conditions, such as dynamic end play and radial run-out.

“Meeting and surpassing customer and application needs often requires integrating new thinking with established expertise,” said Joel Johnson, vice president of technology, Simrit. “Our CASCO Cassette Shaft Seal is just one example of how Simrit takes a different approach to sealing to ensure we’re continually providing our customers with solutions that further optimize their products and technologies.”

Applicable for unidirectional applications with a primary shaft range of 70 to 180 mm, the main lip of the design contacts a surface perpendicular to the shaft (rather than radially). It uses an axial (or side-located lip) to incorporate a hydrodynamic pumping helix feature that is molded into the lip and runs against a metal sleeve. This is augmented by the dynamic slinger effect of the rotating inner sleeve. Further, an integral excluder dust lip of non-woven polyester allows positive contact to the shaft, while preventing dirt ingress without high wear or heat build-up.

Simrit’s CASCO Cassette Shaft Seal demonstrated positive results when tested (more than 55 times) under such extreme operating conditions as: extreme temperatures; abrasive fluids / chemicals; harsh environments; etc. As a result, it offers a service life potential of more than one million miles. Further, the Simrit’s CASCO Cassette Shaft Seals provides:

Extremely low torque drag with low heat generation and excellent wear resistance;

Enhanced oil retention due to the centrifugal “slinger” action of the wear sleeve;

Highly compatible Fluorocarbon (FKM) compound;

Superior sealing performance;

High shaft eccentricities and vibrations; and

Integrated wear sleeve to effectively lower the complete system cost.

For additional information or to speak with a Simrit expert about the company’s CASCO Cassette Shaft Seals, stop by the Simrit booth (#S-13657) at the IFPE 2011 Show held at the Las Vegas Convention Center from March 22 to 26.

To improve and minimize variation of rod counter surface quality for hydraulic applications, Simrit has specified six additional parameters. Expanding on the three parameters that are traditionally used to measure surface finish and define sealing technology requirements, these new attributes allow engineers to more accurately predict, and therefore anticipate, seal behavior without additional measurements or time.

“The precise evaluation of an application’s surface finish is critical to the overall effectiveness of the entire sealing system,” said Joel Johnson, vice president of technology, Simrit. “Based on the Abbott Firestone Curve and ISO methodology, our new factors modernize the standards for counter surface examination, which helps extend the life and increase the performance of sealing systems.”

Simrit determined that, while important, the traditional three testing parameters – Ra, Rmax and Rz – were not adequate to accurately classify surface abrasiveness and a component’s potential to hold lubricant. To address current and future industry trends and expectations, Simrit developed an improved methodology that better identifies surface characteristics over a defined length and complete depth of the profile.

This improved methodology consists of the following attributes that work to more accurately define surface texture and, as a result, improve the life of the sealing system:

R<sub>k</sub> – core roughness depth;

R<sub>pk</sub> – mean height of the peaks protruding from the roughness core profile;

R<sub>vk</sub> – mean depth of the valleys protruding from the roughness core profile;

R<sub>pkx</sub> – the full peak height;

Rvkx – the full valley depth; and

Mr – material ratios (dependent on Rpk and Rvk).

Initial in-house testing by Simrit indicates that the new parameters, through the more accurate evaluation of surface characteristics, are able to reduce part wear and extend system life. Additionally, Simrit’s newly identified methodology can be applied to numerous markets and dynamic applications.

For additional information or to speak with a Simrit expert about the company’s Surface Finish technology, stop by the Simrit booth (#S-13657) at the IFPE 2011 Show held at the Las Vegas Convention Center from March 22 to 26.
